Connect the Hikvision IP camera to a PoE switch using an Ethernet cable. Verify the indicator lights on the switch to confirm PoE power delivery. Connect an Ethernet cable from the uplink port on the Dahua NVR to the PoE switch. Avoid plugging this cable into the dedicated PoE ports on the back of the NVR. Connect a configuration computer to the PoE switch via an uplink port.

Enable ONVIF on the Hikvision Camera

Access the Hikvision camera web interface on the connected computer using the device IP address, username, and password. Navigate to Configuration > Network > Basic Settings > Port to identify the HTTP Port value. Navigate to Advanced Settings > Integration Protocol. Check the Enable ONVIF box. Click Save.

Add the IP Camera to the Dahua NVR

Log into the Dahua NVR interface. Navigate to the Camera menu and select Add. Select an available channel (e.g., D1 to D14). Select ONVIF from the Protocol dropdown menu. Input the Hikvision camera IP address. Input the HTTP Port matching the value found in the Hikvision network settings. Input the Hikvision camera password. Click Save.

Verify Device Status and Live View

Monitor the camera status indicator on the NVR interface. The indicator displays red during processing and turns green when the connection establishes and recording begins. Navigate to Live View to confirm the video feed displays on the monitor.

Common Errors & Notes

  • Incorrect NVR Port Usage: Connecting the PoE switch directly to the NVR’s dedicated PoE camera ports prevents network communication. The connection must utilize the NVR’s LAN uplink port.
  • Disabled Protocol: Hikvision cameras do not broadcast via ONVIF by default. The protocol requires manual activation in the device web interface.
  • Mismatched HTTP Ports: The port configured on the Dahua NVR must exactly match the HTTP port assigned in the Hikvision camera settings (e.g., 80, 8080, 8081).

Use Cases

  • Integrating equipment from different security brands using a universal communication protocol.
  • Expanding an existing Dahua recording system with third-party ONVIF-compatible PoE cameras.
